OTTAWA —
The minority Parliament will survive another day.
The Conservative government's budget passed in the House of
Commons Wednesday evening by a margin of 175 to 113.
The Tories were aided by the Bloc Quebecois who supported the budget
vote.
Liberal MPs booed Bloc Quebecois Leader Gilles Duceppe as he rose to
support the Tory budget.
Had the Tories lost the vote then the government would have been
defeated and an election would have been called.
The Liberals and the NDP both voted against the budget. They are
opposed to a number of items in the budget, including the Tory
decision not to adopt the Liberal early childhood learning
program.
The budget has been given positive reviews and includes a
one-per-cent cut in the GST and the new monthly cheque of $100 for
families for each child under six.
