- 2002 Canadian Alliance RACE FOR Leader -

Harper wins Alliance leadership race
OTTAWA - (Web posted March 21, 2002 @ 8:50 a.m.) - Stephen Harper won the leadership of the Canadian Alliance party on Wednesday by winning more than 55 per cent of the mail-in ballots in the campaign. His nearest rival, former party leader Stockwell Day, grabbed 37 per cent of the vote. The 42-year-old former Reform Party MP will have to get to work quickly to rebuild the party which almost imploded last year after some MPs complained publicly about Day's leadership.

The deadline to officially enter the Canadian Alliance leadership race passed on Jan. 31, and four people will battled for the job - former party leader Stockwell Day, MPs Diane Ablonczy and Grant Hill and former Reform MP Stephen Harper. Drag Queen Enza 'Supermodel' Anderson had hoped to join the campaign but he didn't raise enough money to formally enter the race.

The results of the Canadian Alliance Leadership mail-in balloting was announced in Calgary on March 20. A total of 88,625 votes were cast. There's information about the number of votes and the percentage of votes each candidate earned below.
