Pierre Ducasse launches bid
 to lead New Democrats

OTTAWA - (Web posted June 25, 2002 @ 4 p.m.) - Pierre Ducasse, the associated president of the New Democratic Party, launched his bid to become the party's next leader in Ottawa on Tuesday.

"I'm here to be the candidate of renewal and not just tinker around the edges," he said.

"I believe a real, profound change needs to happen if this party is to become all that it can be.''

The 29-year-old graduate of Laval University is the second person to officially declare their intentions to succeed former party leader Alexa McDonough.

McDonough announced she was stepping down on June 5.

Ducasse has been heavily involved in the party and in community development throughout his native Quebec.

In 1998 he became co-ordinator of the National Network of Community Development Corporations of Quebec, which consists of a network of local community organizations.

It has provided Ducasse, who was raised in Sept-Isle, with the opportunity to speak out on issues such as community action, community development and the economy.

But long before that Ducasse was involved with the NDP.

At 17, he was a card-carrying member of the party, and between 1990 and 1992 he held the position of associate president of the New Democratic Youth of Canada.

He ran for the party federally in the 1997 election, and he now becomes the first francophone candidate from Quebec to seek the party's leadership.

Manitoba MP Bill Blaikie is also running for the job, and the other potential candidates for party leader include MPs Lorne Nystrom and Svend Robinson and Toronto City Councillor Jack Layton.
