OTTAWA
(PoliticsWatch posted November 1, 2002 @ 11:45 a.m.) Rogers
magnate John Tory will not run for the Conservative leadership.
"In
approaching the current opportunities, I have considered the
public-policy issues that are of greatest interest to me and the
extent to which it might be possible to make what would
hopefully be a positive contribution to the community through
this form of public service," he said in a statement.
"These deliberations have led me to conclude in recent days
that, in my case and at this time, the answers to these
questions do not lie in the federal realm."
So far the only candidate on
the Tory leadership ballot is Heward
Grafftey. Earlier this week MP Peter MacKay resigned as House
leader to test out support for a leadership bid. He will decide
before Christmas whether he will run.
Besides
Tory, New Brunswick premier Bernard Lord has also dismissed
running.
MPs
Scott Brison, John Herron and lawyer
Jim Prentice are rumoured leadership hopefuls. A
leadership convention will take place next spring.
